Cancer Palliative Medicine has been functioning in this Centre, since November 2002.The Centre is a recognized medical institution for possession and supply of Oral Morphine. The Palliative Care Services also provide counseling to patients and their family members.Cancer palliative medicine aims at improving the quality of life of cancer patients especially those for whom curative options have been exhausted. Cancer Palliative Medicine Division has an inpatient, outpatient and home care facility.

Homecare facility for the needy patients was started on June 20, 2009. Home care is done thrice in a weekcatering to the need of patients staying within 35 kms from MCC.  There are so far  591 patients registered in homecare facility.  Patients are given medication free of cost. Procedures like ascitic tapping, wound dressing, catheterization, ryles tube introduction are done.  Apart from this psychological support to the patient and their families are also given.
    
E-palliative medicine:
The homecare service from MCC is Nurse - lead and doctor assisted. In order to make the service more effective consultation of the patient is done through e-palliative medicine wherein the patient and relatives can see and consult the doctor directly making the homecare visit more satisfying to them.

  • 9.4.22 - The Jan 2022 batch of IAPC Certificate Course in “Essentials in Palliative care” completed the final exam. This is the 14th batch at MCC. Seven out of nine  candidates  took the online mode of examination.                         
  • 13.5.22 - Ms SheejaNellikka participated in the CNE and was the faculty for Stoma care.
  • 30.5.22 - PBDON(Post Basic Diploma in Onco-nursing) student Ms.Divya posted for 2 weeks.
  • 13.6.22 - 23.6.22:MsRaji Gopinathan posted for 10 days clinical posting as part of National Fellowship in Palliative Nursing.
  • 13.6.22 - PBDON(Post Basic Diploma in Onco-nursing) studentMs.Ajitha posted for 2 weeks. 
  • 9.7.22 - IAPC course in “Essentials of Palliative Medicine” started with 5 candidates. One doctor and 3 nurses from MCC and one doctor from outside. This is the 15th batch from MCC.
  • 11.07.22 - Dr.Shaheer Abdulla posted for 10 days clinical posting as part of National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine. He is also doing the Part-B if IAPC course.             
  • 25.07.22-Ms.Athira posted for 10 days clinical posting as part of National Fellowship in Palliative Nursing from 25.7.22 to 4.8.22.                                 
  • 1.9.2022- Dr.Aravind joined for the Part B IAPC course which consists of 10days of hands on training in palliative care.
  • 15.9.2022-Dr.Appumathi joined for the Part B IAPC course which consists of 10days of hands on training in palliative care from 15.9.22 to 26.9.22.
  • 29.09.22 –Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students ,Mallik Dinar Nursing College and MSc Nursing students of Pariyaram Nursing College and Cooperative Nursing college,Thalassery.
  • 1.10.2022-the final exam for July 2022 batch was held on 1.10.2022.Five out of six candidates attended the online exam conducted by IAPC.
  • 1.10.22-Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students of Malik dinar nursing college,Kasargod
  • 7.10.2022-Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students of Cooperative Nursing college,Thalassery.
  • 15.10.22-World Palliative and Hospice day (8.10.22) was observed on 15.10.22. A program “Know more about your stoma” was organized for “SPANDANAM” (stoma support group).About 50 members participated in the program. Program stared at 9 am with welcome speech by Dr.M.S.Biji.Classes were taken by Dr.Nizamudheen, Surgical Oncologist, Mrs.Reena ,Dietician ,MCC and Mrs.SheejaNellikka, Stoma Nurse, MCC. Colostomy bags were displayed by members from Coloplast and Convatec companies. Program ended at 1 pm.                            
  • 27.10.2022-Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students of Cooperative Nursing college, Thalassery.
  • 10.12.22-The results of IAPC Part A July 2022 was published. Mrs.Nimmy and In the nurses category,MrsSachithra of MCC got the All India 1st and 2nd rank among 110 nurses who took the examination. MrsNimmy scored 86% and Mrs. Sachithra scored 79% respectively.
  • 12.12.2022:Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview  of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students of Canosa Nursing college, Cherukunnu,Kannur.
  • 18.12.2022: Dr.M.S.Biji was invited as one of the examiners for the ‘BRUCE DAVIS GOLD MEDAL EXAM’ in Palliative care at the Institute of Palliative Medicine ,Kozhikode on 18.12.22. 5 candidates appeared for the exam after the online screening exam.The winner was selected through a theory exam,OSCE and viva-voce .
  • 7.1.23-IAPC course in”Essentials in Palliative care” Jan batch started with 5 doctors,3 in-house and 2 doctors from outside in zoom platform.Classes were on 7th,8th,21st,22nd,28th and 29th January, This is the 16th batch of MCC.
  • 11.1.23-The conclusion of 3 year long “VASANTHA VARNAM”,mural painting camp for survivors and staff of MCC was organized as an exhibition by the camp Director ,MrsSulochana at Lalithakala Academy Thalassery Arts Gallery from 11.1.23 to 17.1.23.
  • 13.1.23-In connection with Palliative care day ,Mrs.Sheeja ,Palliative Care Nurse took a session on ‘How to care for Palliative patients at Home” at a program organized by Muzhappilangad FHC.Around 60 people attended the interactive program.
  • 15.1.23-In connection with Palliative Care Day observed on Jan 15th every year ,the department of Cancer Palliative Medicine and Clinical Nursing Education Unit,MCC organized a webinar . Dr.M.S.Biji took a session on “Barriers to adequate pain relief in Palliative care”.
  • 03.2.23- Dr.M.S.Biji took a class on “Overview  of Palliative care” for BSc Nursing students of MCC.
  • 9th to 12thfeb 2023-Attended the  30th International Conference of IAPC  IAPCON 2023 held at NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bangalore from 9th -12th Feb 2023 and presented a poster on “A3 Methodology guided solution to address prolonged waiting time in Palliative care outpatient Department.” Also received the International award for Excellence in Palliative care 2021-22.

Dr.M.S.Biji received for the prestigious “International Award for Excellence in Palliative care 2021-22”instituted by Cancer Aid Society, an Associate of United nations Department of Global Communications, having special Consultative Status with United Nations Economic and Social Council and Participant World Health Organizations GCM/NCD at the 30th International Conference of IAPC  IAPCON 2023 held at NIMHANS Convention Centre, Bangalore from 9th -12th Feb 2023
