Diagnostic services in the Clinical laboratory services and Translational Research, Malabar Cancer Centre, grew several folds from its inception in 2001. There are five divisions in the Department of CLSTR namely, Clinical Biochemistry and Hematology, Clinical Microbiology, Blood Bank, Molecular Oncology & Cytogenetics, and Onco-pathology. 

The division of Onco-pathology caters to diagnostic reporting of all registered cancer patients at MCC. The final diagnosis of the type and nature of cancer is ascertained in the subdivisions of Histopathology, Cytopathology &Hemato-pathology. The techniques of frozen sections and automated immunohistochemistry special staining enable accurate and specialized cancer treatment and outcome for patients. The department aims to be the backbone of dedicated cancer research in the upcoming field of molecular pathology, as cancer treatment moves into the realm of personalized medicine. It has the latest technology in Molecular Pathology aimed at providing complete diagnostic and prognostic facilities. The department is situated in spacious premises in the new laboratory block which is on par with any state of art laboratories.

  • Cryostat cut frozen sections and intra-operative reporting on all OT days.
  • Immunohistochemical staining on automated stainer.
  • Diagnostic reporting of surgical tissue specimens  by faculty pathologists
  • Facility for Fine needle aspiration for OP & IP patients on all days.
  • Processing & reporting of Fine needle aspiration     & fluid aspiration samples.
  • Diagnostic reporting of Peripheral blood & bone marrow aspiration samples with clinical correlation.
  • Archiving of tissue paraffin blocks & slides for future reference.
  • Academic activities of undergraduate & postgraduate teaching.
  • Research activities in collaboration with other department and divisions.

  2. Dr.Sithara Aravind was  granted the Kerala State Science, Technology and Environment Council(KSTEC) fund for “Genetic profiling of Bilateral breast cancers” in November 2021

Division of Onco-pathology conducts Senior residency & two Fellowship programmes for post-doctoral candidates, one in Onco-pathology & other in Head and Neck Pathology to foster specialized training and experience in the field for post-graduate doctors. The faculty and residents are encouraged to do original research projects and create academic publications & presentations. Undergraduate students pursuing BSc. MLT is given rotation posting in all divisions of the service laboratories. The Division also receives a steady intake of Postgraduate trainees pursuing MD Pathology and MDS.OralPathology. DNB Pathology was started in May 2019 with an intake of two trainees. The effort to start DM Onco-pathology, which is a post-MD three-year super specialty programme under the Medical Council of India is initiated.  
During the year 115 academic sessions were conducted in the department and more than 96 cases were discussed in the Path Board
 

  1. The multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) has been set up under the guidance of the Directorate of Health Research (DHR) and ICMR in Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode. Dr.Sangeetha K Nayanar was appointed to the post of Co-chairperson of this body.
