Registry is tasked with ensuring good quality cancer data available to inform and drive improvements in standards of cancer care and clinical outcomes, as well as enabling the use of cancer information to support audit and research programmes.
The department of cancer registry systematically collects, stores, summarizes, and distributes information about cancer patients who are treated in MCC or live in a particular geographic area. These data describe the patient and the disease. Data collected include patient demographic information, cancer identification, diagnostic procedures, cancer-directed treatment, and survival. These data can be analyzed and the information distributed for the education of the medical professional and the community.
Functions of Cancer Registry
The cancer registry functions are:
- Case finding (case ascertainment): Identifying reportable cases.
- Abstracting: Using the medical record as well as other sources to identify and document information about the patient and the patient's disease in a standard manner on a paper or computerized form.
- Follow-up: For the patient's lifetime, the registry continues to monitor the patient's health status at periodic intervals.
- Quality control: Procedures that ensure the accuracy and completeness of registry data.
- Reporting: Analyzing data and distributing information using the registry database.
In collaboration with National Cancer Registry Programme of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) was initiated on November 2010 and started functioning from February 2011 onwards. This department was set up to provide the cancer statistics reported at MCC and information on patient care.
Scope
- Malabar cancer centre is included under the network of cancer registries across the country under the National Cancer Registry Programme (NRCP) & funded from March 1st 2017, which is a long term activity and is one of the major activities of the division of non-communicable diseases.
- The cancer registration is a mechanism to collect and classify information on all cancer cases in order to produce statistics on the occurrence of cancer and to provide a framework for assessing and controlling the impact of cancer on the community.

- Hospital Based Cancer Registries in India [funded by NCDIR/ICMR]: Hospital based cancer registry collect information of cancers reported in MCC, regardless of where that person with cancer resides. Collection, collation and transmission of data of all malignant neoplasms reported / diagnosed /treated from MCC from 1st January 2022 onwards.
- A study on patterns of care and survival of head and neck, breast and cervical cancers in India under the Hospital Based Cancer Registries of National Cancer Registry Program [funded by NCDIR/ICMR]: To describe the clinical features, patterns of care and overall survival of head and neck, breast and cervical cancers among patients availing of care at the study hospital.
- Malabar Population Based Cancer Registry (MPBCR): The Malabar Population Based Cancer registry was launched in 2014 for three districts Kannur, Kasaragod and Mahe. Population-based cancer registries seek to collect data on all new cases of cancer/mortality occurring in a well-defined population. As a result, and in contrast to hospital-based registries, the main objective of this type of cancer registry is to produce statistics on the occurrence of cancer in a defined population and to provide a framework for assessing and controlling the impact of cancer in the community. The department published the 4 Malabar Population Based Cancer Registry Reports for years 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The department expanded MPBCR area to the 5 more districts Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Thrissur and Palakkad in 2018.

- Lifestyle and Cancer: To assess the epidemiological evidence on diet and cancer and to make public health recommendations, the division started new project titled “Lifestyle & Cancer” and for that the department commenced new lifestyle registration and started to enter the data into the new software from 2015.
