Malabar Cancer Centre (Postgraduate Institute of Oncology Science & Research), Thalassery is an autonomous institution under Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Kerala, established under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The institution is located at Kodiyeri, Thalassery of Kannur District and was established in 2001 and the clinical services were started in the same year. At present MCC has 220 in-patient bed strength and the Institute caters to patients from 7 Districts of Northern Kerala in addition to the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Mahe (a total population of over 1.5 crores). The main objective of the Centre is not only to provide comprehensive cancer care but also to develop as a Research and Training Centre of international standards. The control and management of the Centre are vested in the Governing Body, consisting of 23 members, with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala as the Chairman. The routine activities and functions of the Centre are supervised by the Executive Committee, with the Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Kerala being the Chairman of the Committee. The members in the Governing Body and Executive Committee are functioning by virtue of their official positions. MCC is providing a full spectrum of oncological care as an autonomous not-for-profit institution funded by the State Government and other sources.

Standards
High quality of treatment is always aimed at Malabar Cancer Centre. Quality standards at Malabar Cancer Centre can be considered under three headings;
Quality of Clinical services Treatment at Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) is based on internationally accepted protocols in line with Indian socioeconomic and physical peculiarities. Treatment protocols are being regularly updated by treating physicians based on advances made in the field of oncology. External experts opinions are obtained in cases of clinical dilemma. All patients are discussed in Multi-specality Board (MSB)comprising of Director himself and all treating physicians in the departments of Surgical oncology, Medical oncology, Clinical hematology and Radiation oncology apart from onco-pathologist and radiologist. MSB is conducted at 4.30p.m. from Monday to Fridays and all patients after completion of their work up are discussed and if needed patient will be seen together by the entire team. Treatment decision is laid down based on protocol prevailing and if needed customorization. It is done after detailed discussion. Any clinically difficult situations are brought to MSB for discussion and literature review and decisions are taken accordingly. Second opinions on pathology slides, clinical dilemma are taken from major centres in India like Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Cancer Institute(W.I.A),Chennai, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram ,Christian Medical College, Vellore, NIMHANS,Bangalore etc. National Cancer Grid's Virtual Tumor Board facility is also using for second openion. All biopsy slides reported outside are always reviewed at Malabar Cancer Centre except in cases of those reported from RCC,Govt.Medical colleges and other renowned institutions (in specific situations, based on clinical findings, slides from these institutions are also obtained).
Quality of Clinical Laboratory and diagnostic services The quality control tests are done with external agency as Christian Medical College, Vellore.
Quality of Education and Research Malabar Cancer Centre has entered into collaboration with major academic and research organizations in the state for academic and research activities. It is affiliated to Kannur University and Kerala University of Health Sciences.
